The USCG National Maritime Center is responsible for processing all Merchant Mariner and Medical Certificate applications. During normal operations, we typically see a total wait/procesing time of 30-60 days from the time of application to credentials in hand. The National Maritime Center typically advises that applications processing can (and sometimes does) take up to 90 days. The typical 30-60 day processing time can and often does increase if you have former legal or drug use issues reported. Processing times are unpredictable and these are general averages. As of April 2026 the NMC is operating with limited staffing, following a more than nine week shut down. There is a large backlog of applications during this time. Applications are being processed on a limited (first come, first serve) basis. Processing times are lengthy and unpredictable at this time. Your past history DOES NOT necessarily mean you are not able to obtain a TWIC card or Merchant Mariner Credential. While these issues can and sometimes do cause problems, delays, and even denials, we can work with you to determine your likelihood of acceptance as well as handle TWIC and MMC denial appeals.
